Recently, the collegial panel of Shanghai Intellectual Property Court decided to use remote video to hear two cases involving dispute over design patent infringement between a children products company v. a children toys company for the sake of saving the litigation costs of three parties involved and judicial resources, since it would be time-consuming and costly for their agents ad litem to come to Shanghai from Guangdong Province and Hebei Province respectively. On the morning of December 7, the court's technical department got through to the agents ad litem by QQ video and the collegial panel heard the case, during which the parties reached a court-sponsored mediation agreement and the hearing was completed successfully in no more than 27 minutes. The whole session was recorded by videos and QQ video recording will be put on CDs for archiving. After the hearing, the responsible judge, Shang Jiangang, said that there had been successful hearing by using remote videos before, and this remote video hearing has achieved good results. In the future, remote video hearing can be used appropriately according to the circumstances of the case. Justice for the people is not only reflected in trial fairness, but also in trial efficiency. In each case, we should consider more for the parties and reduce unnecessary heavy work of court, which are what judges can do and should strive to do in the information age.
