On the afternoon of October 17, delegates from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) including Theophile Margellos, President of the Boards of Appeal, Sven Stürmann, Chairperson of the 2nd Board of Appeal, and Gordon Humphreys, Chairperson of the 5th Board of Appeal, made a visit to the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court (hereinafter referred to as SIPC) for an exchange of views, accompanied by Chen Naiwei, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of the Shanghai Commercial Mediation Center. Li Shulan, Vice President of SIPC, Chen Huizhen, Member of the Full-time Adjudication Committee of SIPC, persons-in charge of the No. 1 Intellectual Property Tribunal SIPC, etc. took part in the symposium. Before the symposium, the delegation led by Mr. Margellos paid a visit to the courtrooms and the litigation service center of SIPC. Ms. Li welcomed the delegation led by Mr. Margellos, and gave an account of the work ofSIPC since its establishment. After that, Ms. Chen gave an introduction tothe trials involving foreign interests in SIPC, the operation of the diverse dispute resolution mechanisms, and related legal issues oftypical cases involving well-known trademarks and exterior designs. Mr. Humphreys elaboratedon the work mechanism and member appointment system of the EUIPO Boards of Appeal as well as the cases involving Chinese-invested enterprises. The two sides also held discussions on topics such as simplification of trialprocedure, selection mechanism of intellectual property judges, professional judge meetings, and evaluation of electronic evidence. Mr. Margellos showed gratitude to SIPC for its hospitality and said its experience is a great inspiration for the work of EUIPO Boards of Appeal. Both sides would take the symposium as an opportunity to deepen information exchange and share successful experience with each other so as to better serve the cause of intellectual property right protection.
